UMMA Afterschool Maktab Program

The first Maktab (Institute for Quranic and Islamic education) was the house of Hadhrat Fatima Bint Khattab (Radiyallho Anha) the sister of Hadhrat Umar Bin Khattab (Radiyallho Anho). Two companions of the Holy Prophet (Sallallaho Alayhi Wa Sallam) were appointed to teach at her house, one of them being Hadhrat Khabbab Bin Al-Aratt (Radiyallho Anaha). Hadhrat Fatima Bint Khattab (Radiyallho Anha)’s family was also responsible for feeding them on a daily basis. This basic maktab was established out of the Holy Prophet (Sallallaho Alayhi Wa Sallam)’s concern for the Islamic education of the new Muslims.

The Maktab program is a brilliant, light weight and yet comprehensive syllabus that contains the core elements of a traditional syllabus is required for students in a westernised society such as Australia. Establishment of such institutes and educational activities maintain our Islamic identity and educate us regarding the true teachings of Islam.

About the Syllabus
The world famous Tasheel Series is designed by Talimi Board South Africa (Est. 1923). We are not aware of any other textbook package that can even come close to these books in clarity, authenticity, breadth of coverage and suitability for the children. The books on Akhlaq and Adaab cover Islamic morals, manners and etiquettes in such a manner that they can go a long way in inculcating good morals and manners in the children. While all material is good, the one on history is exceptional. It is lucid, focused and well presented. Even difficult subjects have been handled expertly. We enthusiastically recommend that these books be used in full time schools, weekend schools, as well as Islamic home-schools. (Br. Khalid Baig)

The primary objectives of the maktab system are:

  • Increase the love, adab and zeal towards learning and practicing Islam.
  • To build a strong connection between youth and the mosque through frequent classes.
  • To provide more opportunities for families to access Islamic knowledge.
  • To provide support for those individuals ready to contribute to the community through teaching Islam.

Asalam alykum. I am a resident of doncaster east and a stay at home mother for almost 5 years now and have struggled to find any fellow muslimahs in the area. I would very much like to meet other muslimahs who also have young children and allow the younger muslims generation in doncaster east to flourish. My idea was to allow the mothers and children to have a meet and greet within the masjid were we could exchange ideas and tips from all things islamic. I hope that you do seriously consider this idea as it is one which is greatly lacking in our area and both I and my children feel very isolated from the greater muslim community.
